Open Standards for Long-Term Property Data
June 5, 2026
A property record that only opens in one vendor's proprietary application has a shelf life tied to that vendor. Point clouds, imagery and structured data held in open, documented formats remain usable regardless of what happens to any one software provider.
Where practical, deliverables are produced in open or widely supported formats — E57 and OBJ for spatial data, GeoTIFF for orthomosaics, CSV for structured exports — specifically so a client's own systems, or a future vendor, can read them without a proprietary bridge.
This is a governance decision as much as a technical one: it determines whether a record captured today is still an asset to the client in ten years, independent of which parties remain involved.
Professional boundaries
- Legal boundary and property line determinations require a licensed land surveyor.
- Final tax positions, asset lives and depreciation treatment require a qualified tax professional.
- Structural, mechanical and other engineering conclusions require a licensed engineer.
- Official valuations and appraisals require a licensed appraiser.
- Thermal imagery indicates apparent anomalies only and is not a diagnosis.
- Legal opinions, causation findings and expert testimony require qualified counsel and retained experts.
