Accuracy Classes and Intended Use
May 2, 2026
Reality capture makes it easy to produce a number. It does not automatically make that number defensible. What makes a measurement usable downstream is the pair of statements attached to it: how it was derived, and what decision it was produced to support.
An accuracy band communicates the realistic tolerance achieved under the actual capture conditions — control, geometry, weather, surface. It is stated after processing, not promised in a proposal.
An intended-use statement is narrower than people expect. A measured roof area produced to support a repair bid is not automatically appropriate for a certified area determination. Saying so on the deliverable protects everyone.
When both statements are present, a qualified professional can decide whether the evidence fits their scope of work. When they are absent, the professional has to re-derive the data anyway.
Professional boundaries
- Legal boundary and property line determinations require a licensed land surveyor.
- Final tax positions, asset lives and depreciation treatment require a qualified tax professional.
- Structural, mechanical and other engineering conclusions require a licensed engineer.
- Official valuations and appraisals require a licensed appraiser.
- Thermal imagery indicates apparent anomalies only and is not a diagnosis.
- Legal opinions, causation findings and expert testimony require qualified counsel and retained experts.
